About This Business
Started in 1978, Howard Gerson, a demolition contractor began selling some of the salvageable products of his trade. Over the years, it grew into a successful family business. After about 20 years of operation at his 1811 S. Park Ave. address, Mr. Gerson sold the company in 2007. The new owners moved it in 2013 from its original location to its new property at 4726 S. Country Club Rd.
When I arrived at Gersons to get a feel for the place, I couldn’t believe my eyes. There were all kinds of products spread out on an open lot that seemed like it went on forever.
Where do I begin …
Gerson’s is a 2 acre parcel filled with, well – just about everything when it comes to second hand building materials and consumer products. Here’s just a taste of what their website lists:
- Appliance
- Book Cases
- Cabinets
- Doors
- Flooring
- Lights
- Metal Cabinets
- Paint
- Plumbing
- Security Doors
- Windows
- Wrought Iron Security Doors
- Wrought Iron Doors
- Wrought Iron
But wait … It doesn’t stop there! As I wandered what seemed like two football fields of open land, including browsing the store I saw:
- Generators
- Glass Blocks
- Tiles (floor and counter top)
- Kayaks
- Large Plastic Storage Barrels
- Bricks
- Roofing Tiles
- Gardening/Lawn Supplies (pots, rakes, pruning tools, lawn mowers, hose reels, lawn spreaders, compost bins, push-type reel mowers, etc.)
- Sporting Goods (including bicycles and even a punching bag stand and bag)
- Outdoor Heaters (propane fired)
- Military Storage Cases
- Hand Trucks
- Rugs
- Luggage
- Kids Toys
- Vacuum Cleaners
- Trailer Hitches
- And so much more …
They also carry used Artificial Grass. Actually, Gerson’s is the storage facility for a California company called Artificial Grass Recyclers (AGR). At the back of Gersons property are giant rolls (more like a small mountain) of pre-owned artificial turf. You have to call AGR and they will give you an inventory of what’s available and the various prices. AGR says that their used grass is anywhere from 25% – 50% less expensive than buying new. For the right application, this may be exactly what you’re looking for. AGR can be contacted at the following phone number: 855-409-4247. Their website is: https://artificialgrassrecyclers.com/
And as products go, Gersons prides itself on carrying EcoPaint. As Gersons puts it, they’re “working with the Beacon Group and the City of Tucson. We have started exclusively selling EcoPaint. This is a re-purposed, re-cycled premium paint for an incredibly low price. This new product fits in with our goal of keeping the earth green while keeping more green ($) in your wallet.”
Here’s what else you’ll need to know … their Terms and Conditions. Instead of paraphrasing the language, I thought it better to just quote them: “By buying from Gersons Liquidators, Building Materials, and PAINT! I realize that most items are used, and therefore might not be in perfect condition. I accept that whatever I buy might have small damages or unique qualities. I also acknowledge that there are no refunds offered, and what I buy is what I get. By purchasing from Gersons, I agree to pick up my items within 3 days of placing an order or immediately calling 520-624-8585 to arrange special accommodations. I realize that Gersons does not ship any items, meaning I MUST come to Gersons to pick up my item(s) within 3 days of purchase.”
My final thoughts – GO VISIT GERSONS. If nothing else, you’ll see a “treasure trove” of goodies. I’d suggest wandering the whole outside 2 acre expanse and go inside the store too. I think you’ll be amazed by the diversity of products they sell, not to mention the cheerful and helpful attitude of the employees. If you’re looking for something unique, a specific part or product, an unexpected find, or just a great deal – you can’t go wrong with a trip to one of Tucson’s iconic businesses.
