Mexican Folk Art Papier Mache Skulls

October 20, 2023 @ 10:00 am - 12:30 pm MST

$55.00 – $65.00

Skulls are popular symbols of Dia de Muertos in Mexican culture. The artist Alfonso Castillo Orta from Izúcar de Matamoros Puebla, was the first one to create a clay skull, decorated with Monarch butterflies and caterpillars representing the circle of life. Sandy Villegas of Luna’s Paper Designs will lead you through a papier mache skull decorating workshop. You will learn the meanings of Mexican folk-art symbols like butterflies, flowers, and bright colors. Using the art of Alfonso Castillo Orta as your inspiration, you will decorate your own pre-made papier mache skull and Monarch butterflies to create your very own skull for Dia de Muertos. This workshop will be held in Classroom 1 in the Education Center, next to the Children’s Museum.
