Climb aboard the bus for another springtime Ed-venture! On this self-led tour, you can explore the beautiful Boyce Thompson Arboretum, with its dramatic cliffs, stream, lake, and varied habitats. The Arboretum, the oldest and largest arboretum in Arizona, is listed as an Important Bird Area due to the riparian area and lush gardens within its 300+ acres. Come prepared with your binoculars as this Arboretum draws in high numbers of birds, including some migratory species that enjoy our warmer winter climates. Of the 275 species recorded in the area, 62 are species of Special Conservation Status in Arizona, giving visitors the opportunity to support wildlife conservation and experience firsthand how proper land stewardship benefits the flora and fauna of the region.
Enjoy 4.7 miles of trails throughout the Arboretum and meander through 12 curated gardens that highlight 11 different regions from around the world. From the Australian Desert to the South American Collection, the gardens are teeming with life. The Arboretum is also a sanctuary for wildlife, with frequent sightings of butterflies and other desert dwellers. Whether you’re a seasoned botanist or a curious visitor, Boyce Thompson Arboretum promises a journey of discovery. Please pack a sack lunch to enjoy at the designated picnic areas. Tohono Chul will provide snacks and water for the trip.
