DESCRIPTION:Did you know that Arizona has a program honoring Magnificent Trees? The Arizona Department of Forestry and Fire Management sponsors the Arizona Magnificent Tree Program designed to honor the largest trees of their species (Champion Trees); those with cultural significance (Heritage Trees); and those proven to be in place since Arizona Statehood in 1912 (Witness Trees). At Tohono Chul there are several trees that have this designation! \nWant to become a big tree hunter and volunteer for our program? This is the workshop for you! Join us for a workshop with LoriAnne Barnett Warren\, the Urban Forestry Specialist from the Arizona Department of Forestry and Fire Management. LoriAnne and her team facilitate the Magnificent Tree Program and seek volunteers interested in learning HOW to use forestry tools to measure the height\, circumference\, and crown width – the three variables required to calculate the tree scores for both the Arizona Magnificent Tree Program and the American Forests National Champion Tree Registry. After a brief overview of the program\, we’ll spend time outside learning how to use hypsometers\, biltmore sticks\, and forestry measuring tape to calculate the tree scores. The workshop results in a tree measurer “certificate.” Afterwards we hope several participants will sign up for our Magnificent Tree Program “Measurement Verification Committee” to help us measure some of the trees needing to be reverified all across Arizona. Masks will be required in keeping with Tohono Chul’s current Covid-19 policies. \nThis workshop is free with purchase of Admission to Tohono Chul.\n

DESCRIPTION:Marigolds (Cempazuchitl) are a staple of Día de los Muertos ofrendas (altars). Their vibrant colors and strong scents are said to attract souls of the departed back to the land of the living. Sandy Villegas of Luna’s Paper Designs will teach you step-by-step how to create marigold flowers and leaves from crepe paper to include in your own altar or fall decoration. All supplies are provided. Tuesday’s workshop is slightly longer and participants will create two marigolds. Less time to spare? Sign up for Thursday’s workshop where you will learn to craft one marigold. This outdoor workshop will be held on the patio outside of the Main Gallery. Participants are invited to view our Día de los Muertos Exhibition for inspiration. Masks are required indoors if you choose to visit the exhibition.
