SUMMARY:Gerry Quotskuyva | Meet the Artist / Book Signing
DESCRIPTION:Friday\, March 29 | 11 am – 3 pm | Exhibit House Courtyard and Welcome Gallery | Free with Admission\nFeatured Artist\, Gerry Quotskuyva\, will join us in the Exhibit House for a question and answer session. Gerry will discuss works on exhibit as well as works in progress including a monumental carving out of a four-foot-tall piece of cottonwood root that he cured for 14 years entitled “The Gnarly Root Project”. \nGerry was recently featured in Hopi Katsina Anomalies: The Unusual\, Rare\, and Unique written by Barry Walsh and published by Rio Nuevo Publishers. Books will be available for purchase in La Galeria Museum shop. \nGerry is a member of the Bear Strap Clan from the Second Mesa Village of Shungopavi. His Hopi name\, Lomahongva\, means “reed standing tall and healthy”. Gerry started carving ice for banquet centerpieces when he worked as a chef before he tried his hand at Katsina carving. By his mid-30s\, he began pursuing art as a profession and found that a passion had been awakened inside him. Initially working as a carver\, he began painting 18 months later. Today he also creates works in bronze. Gerry’s attention to detail and unique interpretation of traditional Hopi symbolism reflects his rich and expressive heritage.
