DESCRIPTION:The tapestries exhibited at TBG are the work of artists from the Ramses Wissa Wassef Art Centre in Harrania\, an effort which was initiated 80 years ago.\nTo learn about an alternative view of art education\, please join us for an evening presentation at the Tucson Botanical Gardens in the Pavilion on November 19th\, at 6:00pm\nClick Here to Register\n  \nMotivated by a belief in the creative energy of the individual and an attempt to enliven craft\, an experiment was seeded in rural Egypt to encourage artistic expression. This story began first in Old Cairo as an after school activity then moved to a rural village with a small group of young children\, with less exposure yet to the outside world\, utilizing high-warp looms. The high-warp loom resembles the very earliest looms\, and it was chosen to allow flexibility of expression. With no preliminary design\, weaving was chosen because it involves a building process done directly on the loom. Local materials used are cotton and wool\, which are dyed with natural pigments including indigo\, weld (reseda luteola)\, madder and cochineal; most of which are grown at the Art Centre. \nThe tapestries exhibited at the Tucson Botanical Garden are the work of artists from the Ramses Wissa Wassef Art Centre\nin Harrania\, an effort which was initiated 80 years ago. To learn about an alternative view of art education\, please join us\nfor an evening presentation at the Tucson Botanical Gardens. \nThis TBG lecture is FREE thanks to generous support from Rory MacEwing and Osama Abdelatif. \n  \nAbout the Speaker:  Maged Nosshi\nBorn in Cairo in 1978\, Maged Nosshi grew up in Harrania\, what was the rural outskirts of the city. Here he developed his appreciation of what is rural Egypt and an interest in the natural world. Trained as an ecosystem ecologist interested in restoring ecological function in agriculture\, Maged’s research explores the coupling between ecosystem structure and function and the underlying mechanisms linking the two. His work includes a collaboration on perennial grain polyculture\, a developmental agroecosystem\, and his research on the sensitivity of water-limited savanna to variable rainfall. \nOutside of the academic pole\, Maged’s ongoing projects includes work on a date palm orchard at the confluence of the Nile valley and the Western Desert\, where he established a diverse mixture of fruit trees with a cover-crop/wheat understory. His contribution at the Art Centre includes the restoration of the salt-affected family farm\, and transitioning to renewable soil regeneration. Joining his wife\, Marisela Chávez\, in her dissertation research pursuit\, along with their two children\, Clara Nur and Radi Diego\, they are currently living in a community in the Mixteca region of Oaxaca\, interviewing milperos (farmers) around aspects governing their local foods (cultivated and wild-harvested) and agrobiodiversity.

Treat yourself to a wonderful afternoon outdoors\, sipping wine\, and listening to live music. Seating is limited\, so please arrive early. The concert series is brought you in part by the Tucson Guitar Society. \nMasks are required for this event because social distancing is not possible in the Performance Garden.\n  \n \n  \nAbout Duo Chinoiserie\nFounded in 2016\, Duo Chinoiserie is a world-culture-inspired ensemble comprised of a traditional Chinese instrument and a western instrument – the guzheng and guitar. Its repertoire embraces traditions from cultures across Eurasia and displays the interactions and similarities as well as the uniqueness and exoticism of different musical cultures. As its name implies\, the communication between East and West promotes an intercultural artistic exchange for a more inclusive world. \nDuo Chinoiserie has performed in Spain\, China\, and the United States. Their performances have been described as sensational by audiences and critics alike\, and their creative artistic activities have been featured by mainstream media outlets including the Arizona Daily Star and Tucson Lifestyle Magazine. The duo has recorded its debut album with PARMA Records which will be released in April 2022. The album features works by Sérgio Assad\, Mathias Duplessy and Yusuke Nakanishi dedicated to the duo. \nJing Xia\, a talented young guzheng performer\, is the gold medal winner of the World Rising Star Competition and was awarded the Golden Bell Award by the Chinese Musicians Association\, China’s largest and most esteemed musical organization. Collaborating with many renowned chamber and symphonic orchestras\, as well as traditional Chinese instrument ensembles\, Xia has performed in many countries in Asia\, Europe\, America\, and Oceania. She earned a Master of Arts degree from the China Conservatory of Music and is currently pursuing a Ph.D. degree in Applied Intercultural Art Research at the University of Arizona. \nAside from her devotion to the culture of traditional music\, Xia is also enthusiastic about exploring new music\, techniques\, idioms\, sounds\, genres\, cultures\, and other aspects of musical perception. Xia Jing’s playing style of the guzheng is calm and subtle\, yet very powerful and emotional. She pursues the true nature of music and makes her listeners feel the beauty of heaven and earth\, love of life\, and the light of humanity. \nBin Hu has performed in Austria\, China\, Denmark\, Estonia\, Finland\, Indonesia\, Italy\, Malaysia\, the Philippines\, Spain\, and the USA\, as a soloist\, chamber musician\, and soloist with orchestra. Among the works he has premiered\, one of the highlights of his career includes a world première of a guitar concerto composed by Jorge Rodriguez-Caballero with the Pärnu City Orchestra in Estonia. \nAmong the prizes he received from international guitar competitions\, winning the first prize of the 2016 David Russell Bach Prize\, a competition judged solely by Grammy-award winner David Russell\, has earned Hu a reputation as a Bach interpreter. As scholar and educator\, Hu has been invited to several musical institutes in China to present a variety of topics on Baroque performance practices on guitar. As a recording artist\, his all-Bach CD\, Ciaccona\, produced by Eudora Records in Spain\, has received critical acclaims worldwide. \nBin Hu began classical guitar lessons at age 11 with Zhiwei Li\, a pioneer and founder of the first classical guitar school in China. He then studied privately in Beijing with Jiajiong Li of the Central Conservatory of Music. His undergraduate studies were with Heiki Mätlik at the Estonian Academy of Music and Theatre in Tallinn\, Estonia. He then moved to Salzburg\, Austria to study with Marco Tamayo at the Universität Mozarteum and earned his Master of Arts degree with distinction. He currently holds a Doctor of Musical Arts degree from the University of Arizona and was part of the studio of Professor Thomas Patterson. Within the framework of his studies\, Hu also took part in master classes taught by Sérgio and Odair Assad\, David Russell\, and Ricardo Gallén\, among others.
