SUMMARY:“Home is Where the Hole is” with Pinau Merlin
DESCRIPTION:Wednesday | April 3rd | 1pm -2:30 pm | Education Center – Classroom 1 \nHave you been on a walk outdoors and noticed a hole in the ground and wondered what animal made it or whether it could be a snake hole? Have you been bewildered by the profusion of holes\, burrows\, divots\, depressions and diggings you find?  Holes abound in the desert as animals seek refuge from predators and climatic extremes\, or hunt for food. Learn how to read holes and burrows to discern who made them and which animals are living in an area. Discover this little investigated phenomenon which presents a fascinating look into the lives of our wildlife neighbors. How can you tell a coyote digging from a badger digging? Why are kit foxes the only canid to live in dens year round? Why does a packrat gather and build that huge mound of debris? Is that really a snake hole? \nJoin Pinau Merlin\, author of The Field Guide to Desert Holes\, to share a peek into the secret lives of these subterranean dwellers and discover who’s behind all that digging. \n$10 for members and $15 for the general public

SUMMARY:Papier mâché Crafts with Sandy Luna: Otomi Heart
DESCRIPTION:Friday | April 12th and 19th | 10am – 1pm | Education Center – Classroom 1 \nThe forms and shapes embroidered into Otomi textiles have ancient roots\, dating back even before the rise of the Aztec Empire. According to many stories\, these shapes were preserved in prehistoric cave paintings of the Mexican Plateau\, giving artists of each generation a template from which to base their designs. “Originally created in Tenango de Doria\, Hidalgo\, Mexico\, Otomi embroidery is said to be inspired by the natural surroundings of Mexico.” It also bears hallmarks of Spanish and Aztec influences\, a reflection of the history of Mexico as a country. Sandy Luna from Luna’s Paper Designs LLC will teach you how to recreate one heart using papier mâché paste and paper clay by modeling the heart and making beautiful flowers and leaves with paper clay. You will be able to choose your Otomi design and paint it with acrylic paints to finish your piece. This is a beginner-level class. \nThis is a two-day class\, and all supplies are provided. You can bring snacks and drinks. \n$75 for members and $90 for the general public.

SUMMARY:The Photography of Yojiro Imasaka
DESCRIPTION:@ \n \n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRegister Here\n\nFree with Garden admission. Registration Required. \n\n\n\n\nWe are excited to debut our first Artist Residency Program featuring photographer Yojiro Imasaka. Yojiro will be giving a talk about his creative process and the inspiration for his current work\, Botanic Gardens. \n“Ever since I started photographing\, I have always been passionate about natural landscapes as my main subject matter. For my most recent series of work\, I photographed using a 19th-century photographic method called “Wet Plate Collodion.” I plan to use the same technique during the TBG artist residency. \nA thin glass negative reflects the vulnerability of nature\, spreading awareness to society that we must conserve the earth that surrounds us and keep our future green. I aim to connect and inspire people with plants by promoting the significance of Botanic Gardens while using the natural elements of photography. One of my main objectives when presenting my work is to leave a lasting impression on the viewer in regard to the natural world.Botanic Gardens is a project I’ll be doing long term\, I think it’s important to highlight the difference in gardens around the globe. The Tucson Botanical Gardens is very enticing given its desert landscape which makes it very unique and an important part of the Botanic Gardens project.” \n\n\n\n\n\nUpcoming Classes\n\n\n\n\n \n\nTalks \n\n The Photography of Yojiro Imasaka \nApril 13 @ 10:00 am – 11:00 am \n \n \n\n\n \n\nSpecial\, Family \n\n Earth Day Celebration \nApril 20 @ 9:00 am – 12:00 pm \n \n \n\n\n \n\n2150 Club \n\n Tending Tucson (2150 Club) \nApril 21 @ 10:00 am – 12:30 pm

SUMMARY:Southwest Basketry & More | Trunk Show\, Presentation & Sale with Terry DeWald
DESCRIPTION:Wednesday\, April 17th & Thursday\, April 18th\n10 am – 3 pm\nPresentation at 12 pm\nGarden Pavilion\nFree with Admission \n\nJoin us on Wednesday\, April 17th and Thursday\, April 18th for a special Trunk Show and presentation with Terry DeWald. Mr. DeWald is an expert in the field of American Indian art. A comprehensive overview of historic and contemporary basketry from Arizona\, the Southwest region\, the Great Basin\, and extending to Northwest and Alaskan indigenous basketry will be on display.  Numerous examples of all types will be for sale ranging in price\, and ranging in date from the late 1800s to contemporary pieces created in 2024.  Learn about their materials\, warps\, wefts\, designs\, techniques\, and functionality\, all of which played a huge part of the lives of the Native makers and their families – from their survival to their metaphysics. Considered the oldest craft of all\, Native American Basketry has declined drastically in numbers. \nEnjoy a rewarding experience to learn and familiarize yourself with an endemic art that is an important part of Native Culture\, and Tucson Culture; with many examples of current Tohono O’odham baskets still being produced today.  You can also see examples of Pima\, Apache\, Hopi\, Yavapai\, Havasupai\, Navajo\, Pomo\, Yurok\, Pitt River\, Chemehuevi\, Panamint\, Shoshone\, Yokut\, Mission\, Hupa\, Eskimo\, Tlingit\, Skokomish\, Maidu\, Nootka\, and Washoe basketry. All sales benefit Tohono Chul.
