SUMMARY:Historic Preservation in Tucson and the United States
DESCRIPTION:The cultural upheaval of the 1960’s resulted in mass destruction of historic buildings and landscapes across the nation under the guise of urban renewal. This prompted the passage of the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966 and provided a legal framework for preservation. Ken Scoville\, local historian and preservationist will discuss this as well as earlier efforts to preserve locations and buildings that would be unthinkable losses today. Independence Hall in Philadelphia\, for example\, was saved in 1816 before the entire block was to be leveled\, and Mount Vernon was crumbling before the Mount Vernon Ladies Association got involved in 1853. Closer to home\, Casa Grande Ruin was designated the nation’s first archaeological reserve in 1889 and later became a national monument. These national acts for preservation were the cornerstone for historic preservation in Tucson as urban renewal tore through the heart of early Tucson beginning in 1965. The first three historic districts in the state of Arizona were established in downtown Tucson in the early 1970’s. Please note\, this lecture will be presented via Zoom.

If you would like to be added to the waitlist\, please email khayes@tohonochul.org or registration is still available for Desert Garden Pendants \nIf you love the Sonoran Desert\, you’ll love capturing its beauty in silver metal clay using organic materials found in and around the Tucson area such as prickly pear and cholla skeletons and mesquite beans. Choose from an assortment of desert materials and create a pair of earrings\, pendant\, or charm. Lyle Rayfield will teach you to use a 2-part mix to capture the impression of your selected sample and recreate its shape in silver clay. You will also learn how a simple butane torch can fire your pieces\, so that you can continue to use organic materials to make interesting jewelry at home without a kiln. Microscopic particles of pure silver are combined with an organic binder to produce the clay-like substance known as silver metal clay. When fired at high temperatures\, the binder burns off and the metal particles fuse into a solid piece of silver. No experience is necessary\, and all skill levels are welcome. Demonstrations and instruction will cover how to properly roll\, texture\, shape\, refine\, fire\, and finish metal clay creations. All materials are supplied; magnifying lenses (if needed) and an apron are optional.

Please note performers are subject to change. \n\n  \n \n  \nAbout Michael Anthony Nigro\nAs an international concert artist Mr. Nigro has given concerts and master classes for numerous universities\, performing arts centers\, church concert series\, guitar societies\, libraries\, and museums\, including concert tours in Argentina\, Chile\, France\, Bulgaria\, Greece\, and the Philippines. \nAs a recording artist\, his discography includes a total of 6 CD’s: 3 solo recordings\, 2 recordings with guitar and flute\, and most recently Tucson Guitar Quartet’s debut CD\, Latin American\nSoundscapes. \nFor 12 years\, Michael was an Assistant Professor of Music at Vanguard University where he established a thorough and comprehensive guitar program that graduated many notable students. \nPresently\, Michael works for the Academy of Math in Science in Tucson\, AZ where he teaches classical guitar classes to elementary and middle school students. He is also on the faculty at the\nBangalore Conservatory in India. \nMichael holds a Master of Music degree in Guitar Performance from California State University\, Fullerton and a Bachelor of Music degree in Guitar Performance from Indiana University\, Bloomington. His principle teachers were David Grimes and Ernesto Bitetti. He is an active member of the guitar community; he is co-founder of the Long Beach Classical Guitar Society\, co-author of “The Essential Classical Guitar Scale Book\,” published on Mel Bay\, and reviewer of new music publications for Soundboard. \n

SUMMARY:Chair Yoga in the Gardens
DESCRIPTION:This outdoor class with Mary Carhuff is ideal for anyone who struggles with earth (floor) poses. Practice will begin one hour earlier as we enter the warmer months. Mary is a Certified Yoga Teacher and Yoga Therapist. This balance focused class is broken up into 30 minutes of seated yoga followed by 30 minutes of standing poses using the chair for balance. Chairs will be provided. All are encouraged to practice at their own pace and modifications will be demonstrated. Please bring a water bottle and a hat. Stroll the grounds afterwards and take in the beauty of the gardens! \n$10 members | $10 plus cost of admission for the general public  \nStudents pay instructor directly | Preregistration not required
