SUMMARY:BioBlitz – City Nature Challenge
DESCRIPTION:Are you up for a challenge? Tohono Chul is partnering with Pima County Master Naturalists and other local organizations for the 2023 City Nature Challenge! This annual four-day global challenge works toward a common goal of documenting biodiversity\, while engaging people and connecting them to nature. Participants in BioBlitz receive FREE ADMISSION to Tohono Chul during the event. \nPlease use the RSVP form below if you plan on participating so we know how many people to expect! \nParticipants are encouraged to take the free Intro to iNaturalist course from 8:30 – 9 am in the Education Center; just before BioBlitz begins! \nABOUT BIOBLITZ \nThis event started in 2016 as a competition between San Francisco and Los Angeles\, the City Nature Challenge (CNC) has grown into an international event\, motivating people around the world to find and document wildlife in and around their cities\, using biodiversity recording apps like iNaturalist. This annual four-day global challenge works toward a common goal of documenting biodiversity\, while engaging people and connecting them to nature. \n \nPart 1 of the City Nature Challenge – citizen scientists will find and document WILD plants\, animals\, fungi\, lichen\, etc. found in our region. Tohono Chul will host a BioBlitz on Sunday\, April 30th from 9:00 am – 12:00 pm. Participants will break up into groups to explore and document their findings along the South Loop Trail and the Desert View Trail using the iNaturalist app. Volunteers\, Docents\, and staff will be available to help with identifications and observations during the event. \nPart 2 of the City Nature Challenge – citizen scientists upload their photos and observations made during the four-day challenge to iNaturalist and will automatically be added to the Pima County City Nature Challenge project. Help identify other citizen scientists’ observations or learn more about your own observations as identifications are confirmed and become research grade.

SUMMARY:Artist Talk with Kate Breakey
DESCRIPTION:Join us as Tucson icon Kate Breakey brings us into her creative world – sharing her personal and professional history and revealing the concepts and processes she employs in her ongoing series Las Sombras – currently on view in the Tohono Chul exhibition Prescience Remains. \n“The images are Sepia toned silver gelatin photograms – part of a larger series of photograms of plants and animals made over a ten-year period. They range from the tiniest of creatures — scorpions\, beetles\, bats\, and mice\, to larger mammals\, coyote\, javelina and deer – several hundred individual plants and creatures in all. Their imprint\, a ghostly shadow\, burned directly onto paper with light to make a permanent record. Never has it felt more imperative to make documents about diversity as we watch species disappearing at an alarming rate. \nWe now know without a doubt\, trees can communicate – silently share information using an underground network of fungal ‘mycelia’. It is a fanciful notion\, but seen together\, the botanical photograms seem to me like a kind of calligraphy\, all the beautiful shapes\, characters of an indecipherable plant language.” \nSince 1980\, Breakey’s work has appeared in more than 110 one-person exhibitions and in over 60 group exhibitions. A native of South Australia\, Kate moved to Austin\, Texas in 1988. She completed a Master of Fine Art degree at the University of Texas in 1991 where she also taught photography in the Department of Art and Art History until 1997. Her work is in the collections of: the Houston Museum of Fine Arts; The Center of Creative Photography\, The Australian National Gallery\, and the San Diego Museum of Photographic Arts\, as well as various private collections. Kate’s work is represented by Etherton Gallery\, Tucson\, AZ. \n  \n

SUMMARY:Reception with the Artists
DESCRIPTION:Reception with the Artists\nThursday\, May 18\, 2023\n5:30 – 8 pm | Exhibit House\nReception is FREE and Open to the Public\nTHE EXOTIC SUBLIME: LAND AND SKY \nThe Exotic Sublime examines the romantic Sonoran landscape as viewed from near and far – magnified or mourned from arm’s length\, from distant vistas\, from out of this world. We are witness – in macrocosm or microcosm – to the effects of time in slow dissolution or methodical accretion; cautionary tales to join what this place used to be with what this place will become. The voice in between\, the creative and artistic resolve\, is a current toward the odd and wondrous grandeur of The Exotic Sublime. \nwith \nPERMANENT COLLECTION | NEW PERSPECTIVES\nselections from the Roy J. Kurtz Collection of American Indian Art\ncurated by Phil Davis | Tohono Chul Exhibits Dept. Volunteer \nTohono Chul’s Permanent Collection started in 1986 with a donation of sixty-five objects from the Estate of Mrs. Robert Wilson. Mrs. Wilson was the mother of Dick Wilson\, Tohono Chul’s founder. Today\, with the recent gift of The  Roy J. Kurtz Collection of American Indian Art\, the Permanent Collection has grown to over 1000 objects. This installment of Permanent Collection | New Perspectives features Apache\, Akimel O’Odham\, and Tohono O’odham baskets selected by Guest Curator and Tohono Chul Exhibits Dept. Volunteer\, Phil Davis. \nand \n10 x 10: A FUNDRAISER\n10 x 10 is an invitational exhibition with the many artists who make Tohono Chul‘s galleries such a unique experience. 10 x 10 features a wide range of sculpture and paintings\, prints\, photographs\, and mixed-media works no larger than 10 inches in any dimension. Each artwork is priced at $100 and can be taken home immediately upon purchase. With over 175 pieces by 39 artists\, artwork on display will change periodically over the course of the exhibition\, with new works constantly being revealed. The curators will be available Monday – Friday to show additional works that are waiting in the wings. \nGuests can enjoy a musical performance by the Tune Monkeys in the Spanish Colonial Courtyard and a cash bar from The Garden Bistro!

SUMMARY:Surviving Summers in Territorial Tucson
DESCRIPTION:If your air conditioning has ever broken down in the summer\, you likely thought\, “How did people live here before AC?!”. There was a grudging acceptance that when May rolled around\, one had to decide whether to stay or leave the Old Pueblo for the summer. Historian\, Ken Scoville\, will discuss summer routines developed around sleeping outside and enduring and evading the heat like all desert dwellers must do. Travel before the railroad arrived in 1880 was especially difficult given the physical hardship of the crossing and the ever-present possibility of an Apache ambush. George Hand’s Saloon Diary provides a first-hand (pun intended) account of the distinct way of life in the summer including his first encounter with ice cream in 1870’s Tucson. Everyone had to come together to get through the summer while having some fun along the way! Although masks are no longer required at Tohono Chul\, masks are encouraged at this class per our instructor’s request.
